Born 21st of March 1910. Name: Yehoshua ben Shloma (English name: Charles), Leslie Street, London, E1. House now demolished to make way for new estate. Midwife checked and found the usual number of fingers and toes, but discovered two different coloured eyes. Educated at Upper Marylebone and Pulteney private schools in Westminster, evening religious classes at Soho Square Synagogue, alternate evenings at St Martin's School of Art, Charing Cross Road. Profession: Children’s Wear Retailer. Married Edie, on 6th February, 1938. Three children: Judy, Susan, Martin. War service: four years in War reserve Police force. Religion: Liberal Jewish. Earliest recollections: being fished out of leg o’mutton pond on Hampstead Heath aged three. Don't know much about politics but usually vote Conservative.
ACTIVE INTERESTS: gardening, photography, oil painting, house painting, carpentry, tiling, electric wiring, bricklaying, wallpaper hanging, piano playing, car maintenance and repair.
PASSIVE INTERESTS: television viewing, plays, comedy shows, current affairs, wrestling, listening to classical music, reading, browsing around art galleries, and todding shops I enjoy walking and driving in the country. I use glasses for reading only. Retired: 1980. Have since undertaken part-time job as self-employed mobile film projectionist.
PLEASURES: eating, drinking (non-cholestrol, non-alcoholic) rare visits to theatre, cinema, restaurants. Enjoy family company but also enjoy solitude. Not many sports interests but enjoy ping-pong and chess – if that is a sport. Must also confess to secret liking of sporting disasters such as horseriders falling in the water, car crashes and skiers tumbling downhill. Also nut chocolate and Coca-Cola.
DISLIKES: smart clothes, conversation before 10 AM, loud pop music, greenfly, weeds in the garden and people who eat garlic unless I eat it first.
Holidays: short breaks, car touring or air package tours abroad. Visited Israel four years ago. Non-smoker, non-gambler but sometimes tell lies. Tell funny stories badly. Dislike telephones. Love all my grand nephews and nieces.
